The University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) purchased the Sterilwave solution from Bertin Medical Waste one year ago. This large university hospital in the Netherlands conducts extensive research and shares its knowledge for the benefit of patients and society.
With a production of more than 200 tons of hospital waste each year, the hospital is implementing a strict waste policy and has the ambition to reach CO2 neutrality by 2030. The hospital is also aiming for a total circular economy by 2050. To achieve this, it had to review its waste treatment process based on incineration, an alternative that is not very responsible and highly polluting to the environment.
Sterilwave, a 100% electric and eco-responsible solution, has made this treatment mechanism more environmentally friendly by significantly reducing the carbon footprint and water consumption. Thanks to its microwave shredding and sterilization technology, Sterilwave transforms infectious-risk hospital waste into waste similar to household waste. The shredded hospital waste will no longer be incinerated but used as a substitute for sawdust in the cement industry. UMC Utrecht thus becomes the first hospital in the Netherlands to recycle wastethanks to Bertin Medical Waste solution.
