On October 10th, 2017, Sterilwave was awarded the title of Innovation of the Year 2017 in the UK Health Sector during the gala dinner of the Healthcare Estates Congress in Manchester. This title was obtained by Eurotec Environmental’s Sterilwave Waste Treatment Plant at Whipps Cross Hospital, NHS.
This prize rewards the installation of the first UK site for onsite treatment of infectious waste – an economical & ecological alternative to traditionnal collection and off-site elimination. As of now, Sterilwave is the one and only technology approved by the british authorities for onsite treatment of hazardous waste.
Thanks to the Sterilwave technology, between 2 and 2.5 tons of waste is treated daily at Whipps Cross Hospital. The site composed of two Sterilwave 440 works at least 16 hours a day, 5 and a half days a week.
Once treated by the Sterilwave system, the waste is classified as waste-derived fuel or solid recovered fuel with the European Waste Code EWC 19 12 10. With an average calorific value of 14MJ/kg, Sterilwave’s treated waste is compacted in a 20 tons container and sent as a fuel for industry sites’ ovens (like cement plants) or waste-to-energy recycling plants.
